Random stuff

I don't know what to blog about, so this is just a list of things that happened:

Again, people celebrated my birthday. Good thing was no cake. Other thing was I got Frosty for my present. Though I don't want it, but it happened and I am glad that it did. Why can't people not celebrate my birthday?

Watched countless of movies and shows. Finally getting back into Anime. I just hope there will be a batch to watch when I go to rural GP.

I organsed a BBQ for IMU-UWA student/doctors. Arrived late, left some chicken in the fridge, didn't get to talk much to the juniors, forgot my camera. Other than that, it went well... or so they say. I hope they had fun.

Finally started Uni again. And finally I can say I am a 6TH YEAR STUDENT. I was so used to saying 5th year, it takes a while getting used to. Like still writing '2008' in 2009.

Was very happy on Monday.

The long table...

Another birthday celebration, another dinner party. The birthday girl got a new radio, a scarf, and a box of chocolates. She celebrated with a lots of close friends and had a wonderful time. She turned 21... again...

I would like to go into my thoughts on birthdays again, but I shouldn't. However, I would like to extend my distaste for any special days, including, Mothers' Day, Valentines' Day and New Years. Why must I have a special day to do all that? These days have been highly commercialised, with card companies and florists reaping the benefit.

I used to get excited whenever I found out that a day was named a certain day, like Grandparents' day, or Secretaries' Day, or Sister's Day, or Rememberance Day, or Earth Day, or Hugging Day, or Sweetest Day, or May Day. The list goes on... I guess what sparked my awareness of this commercialization is the increase in prices of mooncake and the explosion of jelly mooncakes, tiramisu flavoured, ginseng flavoured, snowskin mooncakes and what not during the Mid-Autumn festival. While others enjoy their mooncake with their favourite durian flavour, I see a lost in the tradition and history behind them. I applaud those who can tell me straight up without referring what mooncakes started out as.

Same goes for birthdays. Why do we celebrate birthdays?

2-3-83

Its that time of year again. I don't even know why I bother blogging about it. I'm going to post basically the same thing I did last year, with the same content. So here goes:

I do not like celebrating my birthday. Apart from the reminder that you are now one year older, it doesn't do anything as it is still just another day. There's nothing special about it. I don't expect anything to happen on this day. No parties, no cakes, no presents. Even if you gave me a wish, what I wish for is something unmaterialistic, so no one can fully fulfil it.

Now that I look back and think about it, I get depressed on my birthday. It is not because I regret being born (I believe that I was put here for a reason). Maybe because I don't get anything for my past birthdays, so I have learnt it through classical conditioning or learnt helplessness. It's true that I don't get many gifts on that day, so I do not even bother thinking about it anymore.

Few years back, the people I cared for didn't remember my birthday.

Last year, my friends only asked the day before my birthday.

This year, it was probably more depressing than usual. Yeah, the dreaded supplementary exams were just over. When I think I did ok, I will feel more at ease. But, I felt worse than I felt before. My only wish for my birthday was to pass it. I don't usually wish for anything, but this is something that may change my life...

So, to not make this post about me, i link this : March 2nd
Enjoy

My Birthday

I don't like celebrating my birthday. Frankly, I don't know what the significance of birthdays is anymore. It's not like I don't want to be reminded that I am old. I grow older every day. I mean I am only one day older than yesterday, not one year. To me, time is a relative thing. It is an arbitrary unit created by quantifying events that happen. Why does an hour have 60 minutes? Why 24 hours in one day? If the people who created the units on Mars, would we get the same results? Mass and length do.

Back to birthdays, I just don't like it because I don't know how to feel on that day. Happy and grateful that I've survived another year? Sad and depressed that I've grown older but not wiser? Angry that no one remembers or cares about it? I sometimes feel alone and I want to be alone. Sometimes I even want to forget that day even. Every year I plan to hide and not be known. But every year I will go through those feelings and I hate that uncomfortable feeling the whole day.

I feel like I want a celebration, but I don’t like telling others my birthday. It is like there isn’t a point in giving out that information because I am not going to get anything. Even with loved ones, good friends, they all don’t remember. I don’t want to be reminding them; that is just blunt.

Others celebrate their birthdays by throwing a party and inviting a lot of people. I don’t do that anymore. I used to give out sweets to everyone in class and close friends on my birthday because that is the thing to do. My last biggest celebration was when I was 10 when even my father’s friends came. I have no idea why. As I grew older, the parties got smaller, even to a point of just a wish from my family. We used to be able to pick our own presents and nothing was ever a big surprise. From the kiddie toys to the story books, everything was what I wanted. In my teenage years, my gifts became more like everything I needed, practical items. This, was always given by my sister. In the end, whenever I get gifts or receive any, I would prefer something more lasting. I don’t like perishable goods, like chocolates or candy.

For the past few years now, I didn’t get any presents for my birthday. I am just getting used to that. Then it hit me as to why… it is just another day.

Harvie Krumpet

Won the Best Animated Short Film in the 2003 Australian Film Institute. I do wonder though, why it won. It was interesting, but NOT for children. It's for us studying psychiatry. It's just interesting how the director does things. In the DVD that I have, there are other short films also with weird stories that are related to psych.

Harvie is a very unfortunate man. He was born with a schizophrenic mother who developed Alzheimers, had Tourette's Syndrome, had his skull cracked, struck by lightning, has a testicle removed... He got married (but his wife later died of a stroke), they adopted a little girl (who went on to be a lawyer, and finally he himself developed Alzheimers.

This story is basically a journey to discover himself. And in the middle of the film, the famous words get uttered again: CARPE DIEM. And so he went on doing strange stuff like liberating animals from the slaughter house, became a vegetarian, joined a nudist camp... It's interesting how those words keep coming up in the things I do.

So, in total, I have watched 6 films, not including the ones I watched on TV. However, they are all older movies and none of the new ones. I am also watching Anime before I go to bed. If I think about it, I'm doing not badly in surviving here in Perth.

Last night was a friend's birthday party. We showered him with water and flour. I miss this kind of fun... I have not had this much fun for a long time. It feels quite nostalgic when I think back about things that have happened to me in the past. Like the countless orientation that I've been through; in ASEAN, in NJ, and in IMU. It's just so much fun to not be a grown-up just for that few minutes. It's just interesting how much you can find out from a person by the way they play. Work is one thing, and everyone can put up a face in normal times. But when it come to play, I think you can get much of a person's personality and character. There is also the words that mean something like: judging a person from how he treats the people under him and how he treats his peers.

Of course everybody has their own personality, but most people hide it in public. Everybody wants to look good in front of others, nobody shows who they really are (of course there are exceptions). Harvie shows who he really is, and he is free and he knows what it is to be human...

Anyway, this song is from Harvie Krumpet:

God is better than football
God is better than beer
God is better than cricket'
Cause God's there all the year

He isn't shut on Sundays
He isn't stopped by rain
He's better than a captain coach
You can talk to Him again and again and again and again and again

Ooh! God is better than football
God is better than beer
God is better than cricket
'Cause God's there all the year

Psychiatry is a very colourful subject. There is something new every day and there is still much to learn. It has been an up and down journey being in this ward. There are times when I feel that I have Bipolar disorder. There are times when I feel at the top of the world, and there are times when I feel like I don't know anything. I do don't know anything...

other happenings:
My birthday was on Thursday, and as usual, I can't think of anything special to do that can actually be done. I thought of disappearing for the day as there isn't much to miss. But of course there were things that I cannot disappear from. Thursdays are always busy for us. We have lectures and people actually dress up for lectures. or dress down, whichever way you see it.

That night, we went out to the cafe by the riverside to have a late night snack. That was my celebration. It was good enough for me.

Then of course they surprised me with a cake on Friday. It was the beginning of the weekend and everybody could stay out later. I had a nice cake: spongy. I had nice candles. Had chilli mussles, spaghetti and garlic bread. It was nice. The funny thing about birthdays is that I don't believe in them. It's just another day for me, but it is a time for me to be older and be depressed about it. It's nice to have friends over and everything, but we do that all the time. I do thank them though. I like friends over, but yet I like to be alone on my birthday. Ironic, isn't it.

That night, we rented movies and watched it over at the girls' campus, with a big wide screeen and chips and vodka. The first movie was a "based on a true story" movie with no story. If you have watched House of Wax, this show is much worse. The bodies were never found and there was only one survivor who has no idea what happened to his friends. He escaped without the bad guy knowing and was found out in the desert. So the story was most probably made up and the heroic acts by the two other girls might not be real. They died anyway, so we don't actually know the truth. There was a courtcase but there were not enough evidence and the killer was set free. Do not ever visit or watch Wolf Creek

The second movie was Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo. I've watched it already, and it's not as good as the first one. But hilarious. And as a psych rotation student, the main highlight I saw was: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

On Saturday we went to the beach. We rode the waves and it was FUN! Never in Malaysia were the waves this big. It was 38 Degrees, but it was worth it. And we stayed until the sun set, something I have not done. It was nice watching the sky turning red and melt into dark blue.

On Sunday, I finally got to try Sarawak Laksa, courtesy of Grace's cousin, Rachel.

Well, that's a summary of what happened over the last weekend.

I guess that it is my birthday today... It started out rather well I guess. The order in which people wished me is confusing.. If I consider the time exactly, then Evelyn will be the first to have wished me... Richard and Grace next... Shi Ching somewhere along the line, and Vasan's sms, I can't really remember when did Sheena and Yean Koon wished me... oh well, the calls stopped at about 1pm and I finally get to have some sleep...

I was feeling depressed in the afternoon, as I didn't know what is going on and where they were planning to take me... I waited and recieved calls from Evelyn and Shi Ching trying to decide where on Earth they were going to take me. And I was getting scared that they were going to pull it off... What a day... So I decided to shut myself off from the world as planned and done the previous year and went to sleep. Come on, if they got me so excited I was scared that I would be disappointed...

It was a peaceful half an hour before I had to start doing things again. I had to move my things to my new apartment and I was all alone. I wasn't happy that I was alone, but I was glad that I had time for myself. But finally, Evelyn called me down, greeted me with a cake. I feel so much better already...

First stop, Swensons. It's so annoying when you invite people along, and in the end they don't have anything to say to you much. And the person whom I want to be with can't go near me. Ate two ice-cream all by myself... lime flavoured... interesting... ate 4 cherries and only one stalk I managed to tie a knot in... Ah, then I played with dry ice... cool, but dangerous.

Next, we went to somewhere near Taylors to have our dinner.. strangely after two bowls of ice-cream, I still could still eat a beef steak... or what looked like a beef steak... haha. Nice, but not really worth my RM10... oh well... While eating this meal, we played scrabble. Wonderful game which my mother insisted so much on playing to improve our English and skills the like. Evelyn paired up with Jody, Elena and I were helped by our score keeper, Grace. Oh yeah, since it was my birthday, i guessed that they would let me win... I breached the 200points barrier and I am so proud of myself... not really, but given the fact that I was under pressure and such a great amount of hurt and insecurity... ah well...

After dinner, we went back to Grace's place to eat my cake... well, Evelyn's cake actually.. and they sang 'Can't take my eyes off you'... nice, love it. The day got better and better but I was glad it was over...

Presents that I got: Kisses from my group members (I apologise to those who would be jealous...), In Motion (?) perfume from the bestest group of friends that I could ever wished for, Box of chocolates from Ai Lee, Chocolates from my granddaugther, BEAUTIFUL animal stamps from Sheena, icecream from Siaw...
